Post-op PRK Surgery

Ok, it’s over, you have left the surgical suite, the surgery is now over … what to expect now.

With the PRK surgery you will have a few more days of discomfort and blurring vision as compared with the LASIK surgery.

In the case of the PRK procedure we remove the surface layer of the cornea known as the epithelium. With this comes discomfort due to the fact that the cornea is filled with very sensitive corneal nerves. We do place a contact lens over the wound site post operatively to act as a buffer from the lid and these exposed corneal nerves.

The best thing to do is take all you medication as prescribed, stay ahead of the discomfort and rest as much as possible. It usually takes 3 days on average for the epithelium to regenerate; but everyone does heal differently.

Once the contact lens is removed at the 3 day visit it takes a couple of days to smoothen out and that is when the vision starts to improve.
