| Other Refractive
Surgical Options
Sometimes
for a variety of reasons, refractive laser surgery is not an
option for some patients. For example, this can be due to the
high degree of nearsightedness / farsightedness / astigmatism or
from the patients’ corneal thickness.
Corneal thickness plays an important role, especially for LASIK,
if the cornea is too thin, laser refractive surgery should not
be performed as it can cause complications and a poor outcome.
As well, currently, laser refractive surgery only corrects for
distance vision, for many patients over the age of 40, reading
and intermediate vision are also a concern. With age our natural
lens in the eye does not accommodate as it once did and reading
glasses become necessary.
For patients who are not eligible for laser refractive surgery,
options are still available to become free to glasses or contact
lenses. For example Implantable contact lens, Intacs corneal
implants or Clear Lens Exchange.
